Découvrez la vidéo Brahms Earliest "Official" Composition Scherzo op.4 de Valentina Lisitsa QOR Records Official channel sur Le Fil YouTube de Piano Partage.
The earliest "official" work by Brahms, i.e. bearing the opus number.
It was written in 1851, published in 1854, alongside few other works, hence the slight discrepancy in the order.
The composer was 18 years old and he definitely fell under Chopin's spell in this piece. But who wouldn't? And there was barely ten years between Chopin last Scherzo and Brahms first...You can hear the juiciest parts here, in the companion video:

By the way, have you ever given a thought about "opus numbers"?
Bach didn't have any.
Neither did Mozart.
It starts approximately with Beethoven.
It ends where? Shostakovich still has opus numbers, Philip Glass or Ludovico Einaudi - don't 🤣, just years' model.
But back then opus numbers were as important as iPhone model numbers or software update versions. Imagine Beethoven sonata bearing a title like Moonlight 14 V. 2.0 😉
Or iPhone Op.15 №3 😎
