ABOUT THIS PIECE: The passacaglia and chaconne were similar baroque variation forms used both by Handel, Bach, and others. They were always slow and stately and in minor keys (Wikipedia says they were "usually of serious character") and consisted of a series of chords repeated with variations. Let me repeat this fact: Chaconnes and passacaglias were ALWAYS slow and majestic and never fast and virtuosic. Anyone who has seriously studied music history knows this. It seems that this historical fact has been ignored by countless editors and teachers of this work, who instead instead desire a fast and virtuosic performance as if it were a 19th-century etude. Please enjoy this beautiful piece the way it was intended to be played, moderately slow and majestic!
