I first started learning this piece by ear directly from the game on the Sega Megadrive about 20 years ago. It is a very special piece to me, yes its very short and looped as in the game, but its the perfect fantasy piece played on the piano. To me this song is pure fantasy and is hugely nostalgic and important to me as a pianist. It is one of the very first pieces I attempted to learn by ear on the piano, I could never quite pick out the notes though, so it spurred me on and helped me to train my ear to learn the notes from other music.

This is the complete truth, but 20 years on, and I have played this piece on and off at times, I have only managed to work out all the notes 100% correctly lol, it was the other day that I sat down at the piano and worked out all the notes correctly, I am positive I have it right now 🙂

I know this is not going to be known by 99% of you, but I hope you can appreciate the music, it features in the Sega Megadrive RPG - Shining Force 2, and it plays in the background when you discover a secret Elven Village during the later part of the game, if I remember correctly. The soundtrack is written by Motoaki Takenouchi, who also scored the equally amazing Landstalker Megadrive game. These games hold a special place in my life and memories, I had the best times of my life playing these Japanese RPG's and listening to the music was just such a perfect accompaniment. The marriage of music and gaming heaven 🙂 I dont know which I preferred - playing the game or listening to the music, I think at one point I actually only played the game up until I reached the Elven village, just so I could get the music playing to learn it by ear, as it does not feature anywhere else in the game. With the exception of the Princess theme near the end of the game, which is essentially this song, but with another melody on top - this melody I hint at, at the start of the piece and end just so you know 😉

Thanks for listening as ever

Mark 😉
