ABOUT THIS PIECE AND LEARNING HOW TO SIGHTREAD: I just had my piano tuned after a long time playing on an out-of-tune piano, so this is a nice piece to record with a freshly tuned piano due to all the beautiful pedal overtones! I think this is Chopin's most beautiful composition.

Believe it or not, I had never played or taught this piece before recording it here, which I learned in just one day with about 3 hours practice. How do I do this, you may ask? I am a lightening fast learner due to superior music theory skills coupled with superior sight-reading skills. The better reader you are and the more you understand what chords you are playing, the faster you can learn new works. There is really no other way to learn pieces so quickly. When I sat down to sight-read this Prelude from scratch just two days ago, I pretty much sight-read the whole piece perfectly with the exception of the cadenza section with all the small notes. Then, with about 30 minutes practice I had it down perfectly.

The absolute best way to master the art of sight-reading is by playing Bach chorales, since they train you to play vertically aligned chords rather than just single notes moving horizontally. You should try to play a few dozen of them and get to the point where you can sight-read a few perfectly without having seen them before. You should also be able to name most if not all of the chords in Bach's chorales in the time frame of about two seconds per chord. In sum, if you can play several Bach chorales well at sight and name the chords you are playing, this is the best preparation you can possibly have for superior sight-reading skills. Learn Bach chorales and learn more music theory in order to sight-read well, it's that simple.
