ABOUT THIS PIECE: I just had my piano tuned, so I thought this would be an excellent piece to play on a freshly tuned piano. This is my second recording of this famous Prelude, my first recording being from 2009. I have taught it many times and it has always been one of my favorite Chopin works. This interpretation is a little slower than my first recording, which was slower than how most pianists play it. That is, this interpretation is "extra slow". I love it this way. I also love it with no rubato. In my opinion, the best way to ruin this piece is to infuse it with rubato every two measures and play about four different tempos as many pianists like to do. But then again, this is just my opinion. Play it how you like it, but I will play it extra slow with no rubato.

Another way to ruin this piece is to flop and rotate your wrists all around and make funny faces. I have read several blog posts from some of my "haters" who claim that (in addition to me being a "terrible" pianist and a "psychopath") I have stiff wrists. Nothing could be further from the truth. My wrists are absolutely loose and flexible even I don't move them very much. Do you really think I could get such a soft and gorgeous sound if my wrists were stiff? This would be impossible. In piano playing your wrists do not need to go up and down and all around in order to be loose, which is one of the biggest misunderstandings piano students and teachers have. Did Horowitz ever flop his wrists around? Never. But nobody ever claims Horowitz played with stiff wrists.
