Hey guys, Johannes here, hope you’re doing awesome!

Recently I’ve received a lot of question on how my process of arranging a piano piece looks like, so today I wanted to show just that by sharing 10 tips that will help you create epic piano arrangements.

Tip 1: Add Left Hand Patterns
Now my first tips when starting to arrange a song is to add a left hand pattern. The key here is to clearly be able to see the chord notes, a good way to practice this is to tape the notes (like you can see in the video) and experiment with how many patterns/motions you can create with the visual help.

Tip 2: Add left hand octaves
My second tips is to add another very beautiful thing called *octaves*. And octave means that you copy paste the note you’re playing either below, or above it. It usually works very great as the first note of each chord in your left hand.

Tip 3: Surprise!
A very common mistake is to play the same pattern for too long, it can give out a very repetitive feeling which will lead to the listener getting less and less engaged in your playing. A very easy fix to this is to add surprise elements in your arrangements. Something I use a lot is something I like to call “the piano drop”, which is when you reverse a pattern the listener is used to hearing.

Tip 4: Add octaves to your right hand
Octaves makes everything more awesome, and that includes the melody. When you add a lot of left hand patterns it’s easy for the melody to get lost, by doubling the melody notes it’ll pop out a lot more and take the space it needs:

Tip 5: Add chord notes in your right hand
Want to make your right hand even more awesome? No problem!
You can add the chord notes in the middle of your octaves to make it even more big and epic.

Tip 6: Listen to the rhythm and accents
This is crucial for your arrangement sound! Make sure to really listen to the song your arranging and try to hear how the rhythm and accents feel. In victory, there’s a big drum at the beginning- and in the middle of each chord, to capture that feeling in our arrangement we can play the first- and middle note of each chord with a stronger accent.

Tip 7: Take space
Once you start to feel more and more comfortable with your left hand patterns, try to make the motions bigger and see if you can come up with variations you haven’t played before. As mentioned previously, you can play the chord notes across the whole piano so the sky’s the limit here:

Tip 8: Your hand doesn’t need to breath.
A good melody is almost always singable, and to make it singable it need to have “breathin breaks” between the melody phrases. So when you play the melody with your right hand, you’ll naturally have a lot of breaks, make sure to take advantage of this and help the left hand create even more interesting patterns.

Tip 9: Have at least one “wow” moment
In each arrangement you create, try to have at least one wow moment. One moment that make you go, “wow, I actually did that?”. Really be creative and ask yourself “what if” questions:

What if I add octaves here?

What if I make the motion bigger?

What if I repeat the notes even faster?

What if play this pattern with more notes?

What if I play this with one hand instead of two?

Make sure to choose something that’s not too challenging nor to easy. Depending on how much you practice it should be accomplished within 3 days - 2 weeks

Tip 10: Choose the right difficulty for you
What matters in the end is that you have an awesome time playing the piano. And I strongly believe that you’ll have that if you keep improving and finding new fun ways to approach your pieces. That being said, the best way to improving is not to choose the hardest piece. It’s to arranging a looooot of pieces and making them a little bit harder for each time.

So that was my 10 tips for arranging a piano piece, I hope you found it helpful and if you have any question please don’t hesitate to ask them in the comments below.

Stay awesome, see you soon!
