ABOUT THIS SONG: This is one of the most famous songs in the world, which needs no introduction. However, I just want to say that I dislike the "jazzing up" of this beautiful and majestic hymn, which seems to be the only way I hear it these days. I prefer it played slowly and majestically with no additions to the already perfect harmonization, in this case by Edwin O. Excell (1900). Piano students who would like to learn to play hymns should start with this version, which I think is the best one. Students should strive for a smooth, legato in all the voices enhanced with clear pedal changes on each chord. Playing a simple, slow hymn like this in a beautiful and unadorned fashion with a good steady beat, legato touch, and clear pedaling is in my opinion more difficult than playing many virtuoso romantic etudes. I have witnessed pianists who can toss off etudes really easily yet are unable to play a simple hymn like this in a musical fashion. This is sad.
