In the theme there are many pleasant and surprising harmonic changes. These harmonic changes are part of the Animal Crossing music aesthetic. For example, the piece begins in A Major and ends in the tonality of F. The avoidance of authentic cadences contributes to a more horizontal feeling for the music. At the last two measures, the "Super Mario Bros. Level Complete" harmonic progression is used. The use of bVI and bVII harmonies contributes to a colorful harmonic palette.
In the Animal Crossing - Wild World Theme http://www.videogamepianist.com/sheetmusic/animalcrossing_wildworld.pdf there are harmonic changes at measures 9-10 and 21-22.
In both themes there is a movement from I to IV, the subdominant. However, the dominant harmony does not appear. It seems that the I to IV movement creates a feeling of peacefulness since there is no leading tone in a IV chord. A IV chord could go not only to the V but also to the ii, vi or bVII, or act as a pivot chord to modulate to a new key. On the other hand, a harmonically functioning V chord usually resolves to the I.
Piano Master Class:
The pickup notes need to be played lightly and go towards the downbeat of measure 1. The way the pickup notes are played at the beginning set the tone for the rest of the piece.
Technical challenges: playing legato
Musical challenges: Expressing the various entrances of the violins, violas, celli, and woodwinds and understanding the meaning of of pickup notes.
