Welcome to the enchanting world of Sergei Rachmaninoff's music as we explore his "Moments Musicaux, Op.16, No.2". This piece, also known as "Allegretto in e-flat minor", is the second of a set of six solo piano pieces, each showcasing a unique theme and mood, hence the name "Musical Moments" or “Moments Musicaux”

Composed during the financially challenging period in the fall of 1896, Rachmaninoff was 23 years old, in a hurry, and in need of money. Despite the pressure, he completed all six pieces within two months, from October to December, highlighting his early virtuosity​​.

This second Musical Moment referred to as a "glittering showpiece", is in the quick tempo allegretto (MM=92). It is 131 measures long, the most of all six pieces, but the second shortest in terms of playing time.

This incredibly virtuoso piece has a quite sexist quality to it:
with a melody interspersed between rapid sextuplet figures (groups of six notes that are usually meant to fit into where you would normally have four notes given the meter), which are placed so incredibly uncomfortably for smaller hands, this piece becomes almost unplayable for the female pianistic world.

Rachmaninoff said, "What I try to do when writing down my music, is to make it say simply and directly that which is in my heart when I am composing." “Simply” was possibly a bit too humble, nevertheless, all those difficulties are surely worth the incredible emotional rollercoaster this masterpiece has to offer.
