When Rachmaninoff started writing his Prleudes op.23 perhaps he was taking his inspiration in Chopin's 24 Preludes. He did end up writing "his" 24 Preludes ( even more - 27, if we are to count those which he left out) , it took him seven years - 1903-1910, and his style changed dramatically. This - opening prelude, with its haunting melody, a "dialog" between low and high voices in the middle part, slowly oscillating chromatic accompaniment in the left hand, definitely reminds of Chopin works, not only some Preludes, but most of all - Etude op 10. №6 , the mood and style are remarkably similar
