Please enjoy my performance of Super Mario Galaxy - Family composed by Koji Kondo and arranged by Mahito Yokota! Super Mario Galaxy - Family was requested by ChangManSion in the 5 June 2013 video.

Let's identify and examine the compositional techniques Mahito Yokota and Koji Kondo use in Super Mario Galaxy - Family to successfully enhance the gameplay and visuals! Please refer to the following gameplay video http://youtu.be/rRm55xE_fEY and sheet music http://www.videogamepianist.com/sheet...

"Family" seems to be Yokota-san's piano solo arrangement of "Rosalina's Comet Observatory" composed by Koji Kondo. Only the A section from "Rosalina's Comet Observatory" is used in "Family."

Let's look at the A section in "Rosalina's Comet Observatory." Kondo creates a waltz to musically describe the Rosalina's elegance. Note that in the track Rescuing Zelda from The Legend of Zelda, there is also a waltz. The character to "Rosalina's Comet Observatory" waltz is affectionate and bittersweet. The affection is expressed by the many appoggiaturas in the melody and the gentle authentic cadence at measure 10. The bittersweetness is expressed by the minor iv6 harmony at the peak of melody and the following cadence. The listener is expecting a happy IV chord. Instead, there is a somewhat sad, wistful, and poignant iv6 chord borrowed from d-flat minor. In addition there is an unprepared appoggiatura on the chord which adds even more dissonance. The consolation is the perfect authentic cadence after the melody descends from A-flat to D-flat.

In Yokota-san's piano arrangement, the melody is repeated twice before looping. The tempo is slower and more fantasy-like than a waltz. It seems that the piece is referring to the family of Lumas flying on the comet in the sky. The pedaling which blurs the harmonies over several measures can evoke the tail of the comet temporarily leaving a trail as the comet flows through time and space. In another version of "Family" without the looping, the piece ends with a peaceful IV-I plagal cadence.
