ABOUT THIS PIECE: This is the first of three pieces in a set called "Estampes" published in 1903. Debussy was fascinated with non-western music and Asian styles, especially, was the rage in art and music in the late 1800s and early 1900s. In this piece, Debussy was influenced by the scales and rhythms of Javanese gamelan music. It is one of Debussy's finest works, in my opinion, and sounds great even when played at around half speed!
