Practicing around half speed is what I refer as the "base level" of piano practice. I recommend practicing all faster works half speed and striving for perfection in notes, rhythms, tone, balance, dynamics, phrasing, pedaling, etc. before moving on to faster speeds. Most pianists try to play too fast too early. If you can't play a piece perfectly at least at half speed, then it is my opinion that you should choose less difficult music.
