ABOUT THIS WORK: Liszt's "B Minor Sonata" is one of the greatest works ever written for the piano. It does not consist of separate "movements" as do most sonatas, but rather, it is one long continuous work subdivided into sections with stopping points with a total duration of about 25 minutes. The "Andante sostenuto" section, towards the middle of the complete sonata, is my favorite section of all. It begins and ends in F# major and modulates to various other keys along the way. The last time I seriously worked on this Sonata was in 1994, which is 22 years ago from this recording. At that time I performed the Sonata in live concerts as well as for one of my degree recitals for the D.M.A. in Piano. I have a student who wished to play Liszt's Sonata and thought I would take it out again and demonstrate some of it for him. After having barely touched this sonata for 22 years, it took me only about one hour to re-learn the "Andante sostenuto" section.
