Please enjoy my performance of Animal Crossing: New Leaf - Kapp'n Song 3 composed by Kazumi Totaka, Manaka Kataoka, and Atsuko Asahi.

Let's identify and examine the compositional techniques used in Animal Crossing: New Leaf - Kapp'n Song 3 to enhance the gameplay and visuals! Please refer to the video http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kuN_E4ttSgk

The music acts as a momentary break between the gameplay. Kapp'n sings a peaceful song to the passenger on the boat. The use of a 6/8 meter is similar to the duple meter used for boat songs such as a barcarolle, gondolier's song, a sea shanty, or a Venetian boat song. The music is semi-diagetic in the sense that Kapp'n is singing the lyrics. However, it is not clear where the guitar accompaniment is coming from.

The lyrics to the song are as follows:

Stayin' young's about having a mischevious smile. You won't grow old for a while with a gleam in yer eye. Take me old man, fer instance. He's a wily, ornery coot. He laughs all day, Laughs all day, and in a way, his ol' soul will prob'ly never die!

[Are ye the shy type, lassie? Yer not sayin' much.]

Remember whene'er you hear this song, life is a trip full of discovery!

Kapp'n uses the similar melody and harmonies for different songs. However, Kapp'n sings different lyrics for each song. As a result I decided not to do an analysis of the setting of the text but rather emphasize the contextual aspect of the music within the game.

Compared to the other tracks, Kapp'n's songs have a more predictable rhythm and a more songful quality to the melody. The other tracks are mainly the hour music. This music is more rhythmically driven and uses melodic fragments and motives. The contrasting compositions enhance the difference between the land and water game environments.

There is a slight harmonic connection between the Kapp'n song and the main theme of the game. Both are in A Major, and there is a movement from A Major I to c# minor iii. Perhaps the composers wanted to create humorous variation of the main theme. The humor would resonate with the lyrics as well.

The use of chords in first or second inversion instead of root position creates a light and flowing feeling for the piece. The music expresses the boat gliding upon the calm waters.Z
