In celebration of May, and Mental Health Awareness Month, I perform "In the Wonderful Month of May," composed by Robert Schumann (1810-1856). This piece is from Dichterliebe ("A Poet's Love") a well-known song-cycle composed by Schumann at age 30. He is regarded as one of the greatest composers in the Romantic era of classical music, and his contemporaries included Schubert, Chopin, Liszt, Brahms, Moscheles, and others.

As well as a composer, Schumann was also a pianist, music critic. He married Clara Wieck Schumann, a star pianist and composer. Clara Schumann was also Robert Schumann's piano teacher's daughter. Unfortunately, Robert Schumann suffered from a hand injury that ended his dreams of becoming a pianist. He had been told by his teacher, Frederick Wieck, that Schumann could become the finest pianist in Europe. At age 46, Schumann died in a mental asylum.
