I perform Widmung ("Devotion") by Robert Schumann!
New videos every Tuesdays and Saturdays!

Robert Schumann wrote this piece as a wedding present for his wife Clara Schumann in 1840!

Widmung was originally a piece for voice and piano. Clara Schumann arranged Widmung for solo piano. Clara was a concert pianist and was one of the first pianists to play music from memory when performing. Widmung is from Myrthen, Op. 25, a collection of songs. Myrthen is a wreath made out of evergreen leaves and white flowers.

Here are the English lyrics translated from German:

You my soul, you my heart,
you my bliss, O you my pain,
you my world in which I live,
my heaven you, to which I float,
O you my grave, into which
my grief forever I've consigned.

You are repose, you are peace,
you are bestowed on me from Heaven.
Your love for me gives me my worth,
your eyes transfigure me in mine,
lovingly you raise me above myself,
my good spirit, my better self!

English translation by George Bird and Richard Stokes
