The New Super Luigi U Overworld Theme begins with the time running out sound effect! The effect coincides with the level timer starting at 100 seconds and counting down! The sound effect signals the player not to waste time and get right to action! The music that follows is a sped-up version of the New Super Mario Bros. U Overworld Theme.

The theme contains many fragments and ideas from the Super Mario Bros. 1 Overworld Theme. For instance, both themes have a short introduction that gives encouragement to the player to complete the level. Both intros have a D Major V/V harmony. In the Super Luigi U Overworld Theme, there is an retrograde diminution of the C Major descending chords in the Super Mario Bros. 1 Overworld Theme. Then there is a short chromatic descending line. These are a few examples of the similarities between the two themes.

In the B section, the ascending notes are similar to the B section in the Super Mario Bros. 3 Overworld Theme 2. Also, the harmonic texture thickens. There are interspersed sixteenth-eighth-sixteenth rhythms that allude to the same opening rhythm of the Super Mario Bros. 1 Overworld Theme.
