I play the Mario & Luigi: Dream Team Theme!

Let's identify and examine the compositional techniques Yoko Shimomura uses in the Mario & Luigi: Dream Team Theme to enhance the gameplay and visuals! Please refer to the following video:

The opening melody is in double thirds. In other words, the right hand plays two notes at once instead of just one note for the melody. These double thirds represent Mario and Luigi working together as a team.

As in much modern Mario music, there are Super Mario Bros. 1 Overworld Themes in this theme. The use of the well-known Overworld theme expresses the spirit of Mario and elicits the extra-musical associations with Mario. For instance, there is a chord progression of D Major ninth V9/V, G Major seventh V7, and C Major I. This is similar to the opening of the Overworld theme where the progression is D Major ninth V9/V, G Major V, and C Major I.
